Taking a break from Christmas, this weeks #createwithcatcoq challenge is sunglasses 😎!! At first I thought I’d give this one a retro spin as I don’t have any retro designs in my portfolio. I started by drawing the glasses in procreate and taking it into photoshop to experiment with background elements and adding some type. I struggled big time with color this time. I just can’t get away from bright modern colors so the end result kinda has a bit more Malibu/palm springs feel with a touch of retro but hey, part of the fun is going through the process and settling on the unexpected. Based on the popularity of the blue colourway from last weeks blender pattern, I went with this as the predominant colour based on the idea of a star or snowflake, but with a floral twist to match the rest of the elements of this mini collection. The second Christmas / holiday challenge for #createwithcatcoq was a festive hand lettering prompt and this is my creation. I repurposed some floral and foliage motifs from previous artwork. Recoloured, re arranged and added more berry sprigs with gold details to match the lettering and the colour palette from my greyhounds in christmas sweaters. This week’s #createwithcatcoq challenge is Xmas/holiday sweaters. Personally I can’t stand them. Ugly, uncomfortable and usually made of cheap fabric like polyester. My take on this challenge was to repurpose my Greyhounds in Pijamas painting which is a good seller via RedBubble (https://www.redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Greyhounds-in-Pyjamas-by-hillaryholt-art/153480680.22W0K). Instead of polka dot jammies I swapped out the outfits for winter sweaters featuring elements from other seasonal paintings - snowflakes, florals and geometric designs. Sharing a bit of process from painting to digitising my artwork. The painting is by far the most enjoyable part compared to tweaking imperfections in photoshop. It can be quite tedious deciding which marks to smooth out and which to keep. It’s walking a tightrope between a polished result whilst maintaining those perfect imperfections that make watercolour my medium of choice. But it’s all worth it in the end. What is that saying that about life imitating art or art imitating life? This week has been a shocker. First we had no electricity for the whole weekend while temperatures dropped to 10C, thanks to a fire in the plaza on our corner. We had no heat, no hot water, no digital entertainment and two kids under 5. The power since then has been intermittent. We’ve had to throw out a whole lot of food in this process and then today, well you can see that I ironically smudged this particular artwork on literally the last letter. So I thought, well, the universe is telling me to have a G&T. Turtles are one of my favourite sea creatures to dive with. On my last five holiday to Fiji we came across a turtle on the way to the dive site that couldn’t dive down. It was clearly in distress. This is usually caused by a turtle mistaking plastic for food which causes a blockage trapping air inside their body. This makes them easy prey flapping around on the surface. We picked her up and took her back to the dive resort and make her a makeshift pond by filling a dinghy with sea water. We brought every kind of sea grass we could find until we finally found one she ate. We contacted a sea turtle resort in Male and organised for them to come and pick up the turtle to take her to a rehab centre to see if she could be treated. We tried but never found out what happened to her.
